MT. VERNON (WMIX) – Mt. Vernon Police arrested an 18-year-old man Wednesday following an ongoing investigation into shots being fired into a home recently.

Matthew Irwin was arrested Wednesday on charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm into an occupied building and possession of a firearm without a valid FOID.

According to Detective Troy Hails with the Mt. Vernon Police Department, patrol officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 2400 block of Herbert Street.

Hails says multiple witnesses saw a vehicle pull into the alley where a male subject got out of the vehicle and began firing shots into the home and at individuals who lived in the home. The male subject then got back into the vehicle and it fled from the scene.

An investigation into the incident led to Irwin being identified as a possible suspect and search warrants for his home were secured and executed.

Hails said a firearm was located at the home and seized, but it’s clear it was not the weapon used in the Saturday shooting incident.

However, the investigation is ongoing and additional charges could be pending against Irwin.

Irwin was taken to the Jefferson County Jail and was formally charged Thursday with Class 1 felony aggravated discharge of a firearm into an occupied building and Class 3 felony possession of a firearm without a valid FOID.
