JACKSON COUNTY – A woman died after falling over the weekend in the Devil’s Standtable Trail area of Giant City State Park.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, first responders found 31-year-old Carlos Riddle of Daphne, Alabama, and 37-year-old Ashley Stempien of Mt. Vernon, Alabama, near the base of the cliff along the trail just after 11 Sunday morning. Reports incident they were sight seeing at the top of the cliff when Stempien slipped and fell 55 feet to the ground.

Riddle reported the fall to 911 and traveled to the base of the cliff to find Stempien. Stempien was severely injured from the fall, and while being airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital, she died. She was pronounced dead by the St. Louis Medical Examiner’s Office around 1:40 Sunday afternoon.
