MURPHYSBORO – The Jackson County Circuit Court has launched an innovative educational initiative, “Kids in the Court,” designed to introduce elementary and middle school students to the workings of the American legal system. The program seeks to strengthen understanding, cooperation, and respect between the Courts and the community.
“Kids in the Court” features two unique components tailored for students in grades 6 through 8 – a Courthouse Tour and a Shadow Program.
The Courthouse Tour welcomes groups of up to 25 elementary students to explore the courthouse, learn about the duties of various court offices, and meet with a judge for an engaging discussion on the judicial process. Students are guided through courtrooms and offices while learning about the essential role courts play in their community.
The Shadow Program offers a more in-depth experience. Over a half-day session, small groups of students are paired with court officers—including a judge, an attorney, and either a court reporter or security officer—to observe real court proceedings firsthand. Each student rotates through three 40-minute shadowing sessions, gaining valuable insight into the daily responsibilities of these professionals.
Before the program begins, participants attend a 30-minute orientation where they receive an official “Kids in the Court” t-shirt and instruction on courtroom etiquette. The day concludes with a question-and-answer session, a certificate of completion, and a photo opportunity with the presiding judge and other court officers. As a final reflection, students submit a short essay entitled “What I Learned About the Courts” within two weeks of their visit.
The goal of “Kids in the Court” is to open the doors of the justice system to young people, helping them understand how it works and the important role it plays in our society. By engaging directly with judges and court staff, students develop a stronger sense of civic awareness and respect for the rule of law.
Presiding Judge Christy Solverson encourages groups interested in participating in “Kids in the Court” or scheduling a Courthouse Tour to contact Patti Clark, Director of Court Operations, at 618-687-7330 or by email at pec@jacksoncoilcourts.gov.
