METROPOLIS – A man was arrested following an early Saturday morning chase with law enforcement in Massac County.

According to Metropolis Police, officers attempted to stop a pickup truck driven by 27-year-old Nicholas S. Shepler of rural Massac County. Shepler was wanted on a Massac County failure to appear warrant for criminal damage to property and felony warrants from McCracken County for possession of meth, resisting arrest and other charges.

Police say Shepler began speeding in excess of 100 mph. When he reached U.S. 45 and Belgrade Road, he turned off his headlights and continued speeding driving into two different fields trying to escape. Shepler then fled from the truck, ran into an unoccupied home and tried to hide in the attic. He was taken into custody shortly thereafter.

Besides making the warrant arrests, police charged Shepler with aggravated fleeing and eluding, DUI, driving while license suspended, speeding, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle, resisting arrest and other traffic citations. He was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.
