MARION – Marion Police are warning residents about new fraud hitting our area.

It involves individuals calling people claiming they are from the Social Security Administration and working closely with the U.S. Marshal’s office.

The caller is telling people they owe money and are required to send a photo copy of their driver’s license or state issued ID card. The caller then states if the money and/or ID is not received in a timely manner, U.S. Marshals will be forced to arrest you.

If you receive one of these calls, get as much information as you can about the caller without giving them any information in return. Call the Illinois Attorney General’s office or your local police or sheriff’s department. None of the mentioned agencies will ever call you and demand money or identification.
