CARBONDALE – Firefighters responded to an early Thursday morning fire at an apartment building in the 700 block of South Rawlings Street in Carbondale.

According to Carbondale Fire, smoke was already showing from the building when fire crews arrived. They identified an active fire in the kitchen of one apartment. Firefighters initiated suppression operations and safely evacuated occupants from the three unaffected units as a precaution.

The blaze was quickly brought under control. Damage was contained to the apartment where it started. One adjacent unit suffered minor water damage. Six cats were also removed safely. No injuries were reported.

The fire was determined to be accidental in nature. One occupant was displaced due to the fire. The American Red Cross was contacted to help.
