The Illinois Department of Public Health is warning residents not to eat largemouth bass from certain southern Illinois lakes due to contamination concerns. The advisory targets fish caught at SIU Carbondale’s Campus Lake. Health officials say testing found dangerous levels of so-called forever chemicals, along with other contaminants, including methylmercury, all linked to serious health risks. A statewide advisory for methylmercury in fish also remains in effect. Other fish species from those waters should be limited to once a month, and officials urge the public to check the state’s fish advisory map before consuming any locally caught fish.
